Séminaire Culture et religion dans les pays anglophones
Organisé par TransCrit (EA1569 - Université Paris 8) et HDEA (Paris-Sorbonne).
Le séminaire proposera deux interventions suivies à chaque fois d’une discussion avec la salle :
- Marion Maddox (Macquarrie University, Sydney) : Religion and the secular school system in Australia at the turn of the 20th century.
- Blandine Chélini-Pont (Aix-Marseille) : l’enseignement du fait religieux et l’éducation religieuse dans l’école française.
Marion Maddox’s work is about religion and schools, from the 1870s to the present. There are many parallels between the Australian and French situations : introduction of ‘free, compulsory and secular’ primary schools from the 1870s, then restoration of public subsidies for religious schools in the mid-twentieth century, controversy in the 1980s, and now debates about ‘teaching about religion’ (l’enseignement sur le fait religieux) and of course worries about how schools should respond to ‘teenage radicalisation.’
Blandine Chélini-Pont, whose work includes the study of law and religion and of the issues around “laïcité” in France will provide a French perspective in response to Marion Maddox’s paper. A general discussion will follow in which considerations about the place of religious studies in higher as well as secondary education will be welcome.
