Social security and health insurance

Since the start of the academic year in 2018, French higher education institutions are no longer responsible for signing students up for social security.

To ensure proper health insurance coverage and have your healthcare costs reimbursed, you must follow certain steps after finalising your administrative registration (depending on your situation).

Student health insurance

To continue to have your healthcare costs reimbursed, you can register for supplemental health insurance with:

  • your parent’s insurance provider
  • an insurance company specialising in student cover, such as LMDE, Smeno, SMERRA or HEYME
  • or any other supplementary insurance provider

Depending on your financial situation, you may be eligible for Complémentaire santé solidaire - CSS (Supplementary Health Insurance Support Scheme), which is either free of charge or costs under €1 per day.

Use the online calculator to find out if you could be eligible for Complémentaire santé solidaire - CSS.
