The European Reform University Alliance (ERUA)

ERUA, or "European Reform University Alliance", is an alliance that brings together the University of Paris 8, the founding and pilot member, and seven other European universities, plus 2 associate universities.

ERUA’s ambition is to build an alternative model for European universities. The universities in the alliance are collectively committed to creating an inclusive, experimental and innovative learning and research environment, open to non-academic society, that will transform teaching, research and civic engagement in the long term:

  • by offering personalized learning paths in a multilingual and multicultural environment, and opportunities to engage in alliance-building;
  • breaking down barriers between academia and society, and promoting open and participatory science, with and for society;
  • by encouraging free thought and creativity, and valuing the diversity of expertise and individual and collective initiative;
  • by working with different stakeholders to design training courses and systems that have a measurable impact on society;
  • by placing questions of sustainability at the heart of its activities.

The Universities of the Alliance cover a wide range of disciplines, with particularly strong expertise in the humanities, social sciences and arts: this disciplinary diversity enables them to develop innovative interdisciplinary approaches, offering new answers and solutions to contemporary challenges. These approaches are supported by the European Commission, in particular the Erasmus+ program, and will result in some forty concrete actions aimed at redefining the role of the university in today’s global context, and guaranteeing an open and accessible learning environment for all students, regardless of their origin.

In short, the ERUA Alliance is an ambitious project that defends a reformist conception of European education and research, based on the values of openness, diversity, equity and creativity, and contributes, in a critical and innovative way, to the construction of just and sustainable societies.
